Existing Building Certification

The National Green Building Standard® (NGBS) provides practices for the renovation and remodeling of homes, multifamily buildings, and mixed-use buildings including:

• Single-family homes and townhouses
• Duplexes, quads, and garden apartments
• High- and low-rise apartment buildings
• Residential portion of mixed-use buildings
• Building conversions from commercial or industrial buildings to residentially-used buildings
• Assisted living facilities, residential care and board facilities, dorms, group homes, and hotels

A building can be awarded a Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Emerald certification level, depending on the extent of the green practices incorporated in the remodel.

The commercial portion of a mixed-use building can either earn Certified for Core and Shell or for Full mixed-use building compliance.
