Delray Beach (FL) Approves NGBS Green Certification for Building Code

On November 1st, the City of Delray Beach (Florida) Commission adopted a Green Building Ordinance that establishes Sustainable Design and Construction requirements for new buildings and additions within the City’s Central Business District. The ordinance becomes effective November 1, 2023. 

Within this new ordinance, the City recognized third-party certification to the National Green Building Standard ICC-700 (NGBS), Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC), Green Globes, and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating systems.

New buildings and building additions greater than 15,000 square feet must earn NGBS Green certification at the Bronze level or higher. New buildings or building additions greater than 50,000 square feet of gross floor area must achieve an NGBS Green certification at the Silver level or equivalent.

The new ordinance is a positive change for residential development planned for Delray Beach. The City previously had a more limited green building policy that recognized a single commercial building rating system. By including NGBS Green among the recognized options, residential developers have a pathway that is uniquely suited for residential construction and is flexible and cost effective to implement. .
