NGBS Green Certification Program Celebrates Major Milestone

March 31, 2017 | Upper Marlboro, MD

Time to Celebrate … Nashville Style!

Home Innovation Celebrates 100,000 NGBS Green Certified at Peyton Stakes Grand Opening.

Today, Home Innovation Research Labs is celebrating the 100,000th NGBS Green Certified home. This milestone is significant not only because of the number of homes that have been certified, but also for what it signifies for the state of the home building industry overall.

“We began our NGBS Green Certification program in January 2009 in the midst of the housing downturn,” said Michael Luzier, Home Innovation President and CEO. “We were taking a big risk to ask builders to voluntarily build homes to an above-code green standard, and pay to have those homes scrutinized under a rigorous third-party certification protocol. But we knew the program was sound and would provide value to those who chose to participate. Forward-thinking builders saw NGBS Green as a way to emerge from the downturn by building better, higher-performing, and more marketable homes. Those builders and the NGBS Green program have continued to thrive, as evidenced by the volume of homes already certified and in the certification pipeline.”

This milestone provides a perfect opportunity to reflect on what a game-changer the National Green Building Standard (NGBS) rating system has been for builders and consumers. For builders, it has provided an accessible and practical national standard to define and measure green homes. It has created a rigorous yet affordable choice for third-party certification. And, because of the Standard’s flexibility on the points a builder can select to adapt to local market needs, it has helped builders of all types and sizes provide comprehensively green homes to mainstream buyers across the country. Due to the rigor of the NGBS, it has also provided consumers a level of confidence that they are getting an independently verified healthier and more comfortable home – and they can find all NGBS Green Certified homes, apartments, and participating builders and remodelers on NGBS.com.

“This is a major milestone for the building industry, but more importantly for residents and for our neighborhoods, ” said Dominic Sims, CEO of the International Code Council (ICC), a co-sponsor of the NGBS. “ICC has been a champion of the NGBS since the beginning because we saw the promise that a national standard like this could provide across the country for every type of residential builder and their buyers and renters. It goes beyond structural soundness and safety, and directly to the heart of what makes a building into a home – comfort, wellness, and peace of mind.”

This is also a great time to look ahead at how the NGBS will continue to shape green home building for generations to come. The first meeting of the Consensus Committee for the 2018 version of the NGBS will be held this month. Stay tuned for new and enhanced opportunities available once the 2018 NGBS is finalized and submitted to ANSI for review and approval.

The 100,000th NGBS Green Certified home, part of Proffitt Dixon’s Peyton Stakes apartment community in Nashville, will be celebrated during that project’s March 31st Grand Opening. Earlier this year, Proffitt Dixon was recognized as one of Home Innovation’s 100 NGBS Green Partners of Excellence for their outstanding contributions to advancing green building in their communities and commitment to voluntary, market-driven, third-party certification of high-performance homes.

and all Proffitt Dixon Partners' properties become NGBS Green Certified.

“We are incredibly honored to have Peyton Stakes take center stage in marking 100,000th NGBS Green Certified home,” said Stuart Proffitt, Managing Principal at Proffitt Dixon Partners. “We have sought and achieved NGBS certification on every apartment building we have developed since being introduced to the program. It appealed to us due to its national recognition, and being developed specifically for residential spaces – including, of course, multifamily properties like we do. Building green is consistent with our mission to provide exceptional experiences to our residents. The NGBS has allowed us to please not only our discerning residents, but also our lenders and institutional buyers who look for a credible certification like this to provide the most favorable terms.”

NGBS Green has become the green certification program of choice for the residential construction industry. If you’re not currently building homes to be NGBS Green Certified, now’s a perfect time to start – with the first 100,000 homes already certified, you won’t have the uncertainty of being the “first kid on the block” to do it; but don’t let yourself be the last. Whatever type of home you build and wherever you build it, NGBS Green has a certification for it. Find out how to build your success on ours by visiting HomeInnovation.com/NGBSGreen today.
