2022 Consumer Practices Reports Available

Fresh, New Consumer Remodeling Purchase Data

The results of Home Innovation’s 2022 Consumer Practices Survey (CPS) on home remodeling are in and analyzed! The top overall finding is that U.S. and Canadian home remodeling purchases are still very strong, two years into the pandemic. The DIY purchaser segment is back to near-historical levels after a spike in 2020, and the outdoor living category is still blazing hot.

Many manufacturers know about the CPS’s detailed tracking of product volume and market shares across many categories of materials. But, Home Innovation tracks brands of remodeling product purchases too. Below is a sampling of the leading brands uncovered in the 2022 CPS – accounting for more units sold than other brands in their respective categories:

  • StainMaster
  • Mohawk
  • Kwikset
  • Owens Corning
  • Andersen
  • Clopay
  • Rubbermaid
  • IKEA
  • Generac
  • Behr
  • American Standard
  • Delta
  • Armstrong
  • Briggs & Stratton

In January 2022, Home Innovation received completed survey responses from 70,000 U.S. and Canadian households, each providing us detailed information about their home improvement and repair purchases from the previous year. In paints, for example, the 2022 CPS found that about 60 billion square feet of U.S. home interiors were painted last year, including walls, ceilings, doors, and moldings. Behr brand paint was purchased by the greatest number for home remodeling; used to paint more than 16 billion square feet of home interior. This was followed by Sherwin-Williams at about 12.5 billion square feet. Valspar and Benjamin Moore followed at about 6.5 billion square feet each. The graph below shows the U.S. market shares of the paint brands we track.
