In 2008, when the National Green Building Standard ICC – 700 (NGBS) earned ANSI approval as the first green rating system for residentially-used buildings, Home Innovation's NGBS Green certification offered the industry a flexible, rigorous, and affordable path to third-party green certification. With all these benefits, NGBS Green quickly became the leading national residential green certification program. Now, well over 300,000 homes and apartments have earned NGBS Green certification, and more than 170,000 are in-process to earn certification.
The 2020 NGBS is the most comprehensive version to date. Its scope covers mixed-use buildings, assisted living facilities, hotels, dormitories, and lodging houses. It includes a certification path for the commercial space of mixed-use buildings; greater flexibility for existing buildings being renovated or converted; a new water efficiency performance path; and practices to further promote resiliency, universal design, and wellness, among other highly-marketable attributes that may be valuable to tout in a given region, market, or amongst specific clientele.
Industry professionals can now earn NGBS Green PRO, a professional designation that validates expertise in green design, construction, and building certification. Successful completion of the NGBS Green PRO modules showcases your expertise of sustainable buildings and designates you as a green professional. Individuals who have successfully earned the NGBS Green PRO designation have an advanced understanding of the National Green Building Standard ICC-700 and the NGBS Green certification program. You can find a list of all professionals that have earned the NGBS Green PRO designation on the NGBS Green PRO Directory Page.
To earn the designation and become an NGBS Green PRO, an individual must complete four training modules and pass a test for each. The four modules are as follows:
To earn the professional designation, all four modules must be successfully completed. See NGBS Green training fees.
Students can access the training at a discounted price of $100 by using the following code: NGBSStudentEDU
NGBS Green PRO training is available 24/7 at the NGBS Green Pro Training site. Each self-paced module runs approximately 1 hour total, and users have up to 90 days to complete the training and pass the competency test to receive a certificate of completion. The training fee allows each individual to take the test twice. If the test is not passed on the second attempt, the training must be re-purchased to access a new test. Training fees are non-refundable.
Completion of a single NGBS Green PRO module earns 1LU Elective from AIA or 0.1 CEU credit from ICC. Completion of the entire four-module course earns 4LU Electives from AIA or 0.4 CEU credit from ICC.
